Launched and produced by “At The Top Salon”
last year’s 2006 “Fashion With Compassion”
was a great success. Thank to our clients, and friends this
event of silent auction, jazz, comedy and fashion helped raise
$16,500 for the Marin Breast Cancer Council. We would like to
thank our host Mark Pitta, and jazz singer Jackie Ryan, our
staff of volunteers and all the stores and restaurants who donated
their time and products. Also, we would like to specially thank
the 142 Throckmorton Theatre for all their support.
Marin Breast Cancer Council’s mission
is to raise funds for nonprofit organizations providing emotional,
educational and non-medical support to persons diagnosed with
breast cancer. MBCC makes available instructive care and screening
services pertaining to breast health and breast cancer. They
also promote co-operation and financial support among local
breast cancer organizations. They join together women and
men diagnosed with breast cancer to participate in an emotionally
uplifting and life-affirming experience: such as Fashion with
Compassion.
In the seventeen years we have been in business we have gone
through the experience of breast cancer with our clients over
and over. You cannot live and work in Marin without being
touched by someone with cancer. We believe that combining
community effort, we hope in our lifetime to find a cure for
cancer.

CHAMBER NAMES TWO HONOREES FOR 2007
There are few who can say that their business has been “at
the top” for over 20 years, but Caren Miranda and Jimmy
O’Keefe, partners in At The Top Salon, can say this
with humor and honesty. The two opened their business back
in 1986, in a space with a view above downtown Mill Valley.
At the top of their location at 10 E. Blithedale, the business
was easily named, and almost as easily became one of the notable
salons in Marin, drawing clients from throughout the County
and the Bay Area.
Talent notwithstanding, much of the popularity of At The Top
Salon also had to do with the comfortable and friendly atmosphere
and the prevailing sense of community created by Caren, Jimmy
and their staff. Over time, clients became like family, and
issues became family issues that were important to everyone
at the Salon. Thus, since 1986, At The Top Salon has become
involved and given its support to a variety of local events,
organizations and fundraisers including: KIDDO!, Tam High
Boosters, Mill Valley Little League, Mill Valley Chamber of
Commerce, Avon Breast Cancer Walk, the Mill Valley Artwalk,
the Canal Alliance, the Aids Walk, the Marin County Police
Association and M.A.R.C.
At The Top Salon really stepped up its community activism
in 2004 when it hosted the first annual “Fashion With
Compassion” breast cancer benefit held at the 142 Throckmorton
Theatre. Jimmy, who lost his mother to the disease, said he
knew he had to do something to fight back when the number
of the friends and clients of the Salon battling breast cancer
kept increasing. The concept of “Fashion With Compassion”
was to involve breast cancer survivors as models and as a
life affirming statement. Hundreds of volunteer hours went
into the coordination of the evening of fashion and entertainment,
which raised over $15,000 for the Marin Breast Cancer Council.
In 2006, the second annual “Fashion With Compassion”
was held in conjunction with At The Top Salon’s 20th
Anniversary. Again, this huge volunteer event was a smashing
success, with upwards of $20,000 raised to assist Marin County
women dealing with breast cancer and to provide funds to help
find a cure.
“To date, At The Top Salon has been one of the unsung
heroes in Mill Valley,” said Chamber CEO Kathy Severson.
“As a vital member of our business community for over
20 years, they have quietly supported our schools, the arts
and numerous non-profit organizations that help those in need.
“Fashion for Compassion” really rallied the downtown
business community and the community at large behind the battle
against breast cancer. The time and effort At The Top Salon
has given to this bi-annual benefit is truly exemplary, and
it is a case in point that small businesses can make a big
difference. I am very pleased to announce that At The Top
Salon will be honored by the Chamber of Commerce as a 2007
Business of the Year.”
